Making medical cannabis tea is a straightforward process, but it requires attention to detail to ensure the active compounds (CBD and THC) are properly infused into the liquid for maximum therapeutic benefit.
Ingredients:
Medical cannabis: Use either cannabis flower (whole or ground) or cannabis oil/tincture. Dosage should be determined based on your prescription.
Fat source: (Essential for cannabinoid binding)
Choose from: ◦ Coconut oil (1–2 tsp) ◦ Butter or ghee (1–2 tsp) ◦ Full-fat milk (1/4 cup)
Water: 500 ml (adjust for desired tea strength and serving size)
Optional: Tea leaves, herbal blends, or sweeteners like honey or sugar for flavor.
Equipment:
Grinder (if using flower)
Saucepan or kettle
Tea strainer or cheesecloth
Stirring spoon
Teacup or mug
Instructions
Decarboxylation (if using raw cannabis flower) is a necessary step to activate THC and CBD in raw cannabis flower. Skip this step if using oils or tinctures.
Preheat your oven to 105–115°C (220–240°F).
Break the cannabis flower into small pieces and spread it evenly on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Bake for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally. The cannabis will turn light brown and emit an earthy aroma. Allow it to cool.
Boil Water:
Bring 500 ml of water to a boil in a saucepan or kettle.
Add a Fat Source - Add your chosen fat (coconut oil, butter, or full-fat milk) to the boiling water. This step ensures cannabinoids bind to the fat for optimal absorption.
Stir thoroughly to mix.
Infuse the Cannabis If using flower:
Grind the decarboxylated cannabis finely.
Add 0.25–0.5 grams (or prescribed dose) to the boiling water and reduce heat to a simmer.
Let it steep for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
If using oil or tincture:
Add the prescribed dose directly into the boiling water.
Stir to combine and let it steep for 5–10 minutes.
Strain the Tea
Strain the tea through a cheesecloth, fine mesh strainer, or tea infuser to remove plant material if you used flower.
Pour the liquid into your teacup or mug.
Add Flavor (Optional) - Mix in tea leaves, herbal blends, or sweeteners such as honey, sugar, or cinnamon for added flavor.
Stir well and taste.
Dosage Tips • Always start with a small dose, especially if you are new to medical cannabis.
Effects can take 30– 90 minutes to appear and may last for several hours.
Keep track of how you feel after consuming the tea to help fine-tune your dosage.
If you make extra tea, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before drinking.
Note: Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding dosage and frequency. Enjoy your tea responsibly in a safe and comfortable setting.
